Milking the Capabilities of Tetra Pak CPS
2nd September 2008
The Processing Dairy at Leckford, the Waitrose Farm has increased its holding capacity by 2,200 litres with the supply of four new finished milk vessels from a leading global supplier of processing equipment for the dairy, food and beverage industries. These vessels replaced smaller existing ones that, due to their age, required ongoing extensive maintenance and periodic integrity testing.
Tetra Pak CPS Ltd has been updating the Hampshire based dairy gradually over the years, so when the company needed to further upgrade its equipment, it was the natural choice to return to Tetra Pak CPS. The modernised milk tanks were installed within two days, which ensured that there was minimal disruption and downtime.
A department of the 4,000 acre Waitrose Farm, Leckford Processing Dairy provides a range of milks, including “Traditional Milk” from its own herd of 600 cows, exclusively to 190 Waitrose food shops across the country. There has been a significant increase in demand in the past few years. The extra volume from the new tanks has meant that Leckford Estate Dairy now has a capacity of 14,000 litres.
The tanks have been installed with efficient chilled water jackets, which hold the milk at its optimum temperature for longer. This has resulted in considerable cost savings as there is less wastage from the product deteriorating.
With the upgraded milk tanks, The Leckford Processing Dairy is now seeing the benefits of the modernised vessels in an increase in reliability, low maintenance costs and the continued production of first class milk.
The new tanks also have all the normal features such as manway safety switches, hygienic non-splashing Cleaning-In-Place vents, removable spray balls, sealed agitator and adjustable legs.
Project Engineer for Tetra Pak CPS, Ken Tothill, commented: "In our experience, we have found that dairy producers require equipment that is cost effective and professionally designed whilst being easy to maintain. We have been able to help Leckford’s Processing Dairy increase its capacity considerably and will be looking to help increase the company’s production needs with upgraded pasteurisers in the future."
He concluded: "Top quality equipment, high engineering standards, speed of installation and a long standing relationship were all attributes which helped to win Tetra Pak CPS, this latest order. The company has been renowned for years for its depth of knowledge, attention to detail and interest shown by its engineers".
